Recently Boots ran an offer on Collection products, if you spent at least £4.99, you received a free Extreme 24 hour felt tip liner. Of course, this was a welcome excuse for me to repurchase my concealer alongside a Glam Crystals liner I absolutely definitely didn't need.
I've only ever owned one felt liner before, a Bourjois one which dried up within the time it took me to swatch it in store and get it home. That's one problem drugstores never seem to address - why are most eyeliners unsealed? Easiest way to spread eye infections that's for sure!
Nevertheless, what could go wrong with a felt liner that promised 24 hour life?
My answer? Not much. But I'm just not feeling this liner. I'm completely and utterly in love with liquid liner and I always have been, so felt liners are like a step back in evolution for me. Surprisingly, some bloggers would recommend using a felt liner before you start with liquid, but I'd say otherwise - liquid is where you need to start. Yes, you're going to make mistakes, but who doesn't? I still bugger my lines up every morning but I just use it as an excuse to make a thicker line!
However, the nib on this is great, it gives you an awful lot of control over the precision, but if you're one for a very thin barely-there line, this isn't for you.
Check out the pigmentation on this beauty though! On my hand swatch you can see it makes a gorgeous opaque sweep, which is fantastic if it survived an hour on my lids, which this doesn't. An hour after application, the beautiful deep black line had faded into insignificance in the centre of my lids. I knew 24 hours was an excessive claim, but I'd at least expected it to last 1 out of 24, especially when applied on top of a primer, a cream eyeshadow and a powder eyeshadow.

As a freebie, I can't complain, because it's a nice alternative should I ever find myself so short on time that I can't perfect a liquid line without looking like Alice Cooper, but I wouldn't expect it to last too long. I have quite oily lids too, so no matter how much a felt liner is primed, it very rarely sticks to my lids and stays there.
I've heard so many bloggers praise this liner to the hilt, and of course, that's their opinion, but if you know me by now, I don't blindly accept hypes, and just because it works for someone else, if it doesn't work for me, I'll let you know how and why. So if you're curious because of the hype surrounding the Collection liner, then by all means give it a shot, especially on the offer I grabbed it with, and I hope your lids aren't as repellent to felt liners as mine are!

I agree completely that this liner fades away really quickly on my oily lids. That said, before mine ran out I found that I actually used it quite frequently - since the felt tip is so easy to control I would create the line that I wanted and then go over it with something with better staying power and intensity. Just a though if you still want to avoid Alice Cooper eyes !

DeleteI am one of the devotees of this liner for days when I don't have time to worry about blobs and mess from undried liquid liners. I have the oiliest skin in the world and it still stays pretty well for me when other liners head for my chin. Priming is a helpful step but I hardly ever do that unless I'm wearing eyeshadow as well.

Yeah I'll give it that, it doesn't migrate south, it just disappears on my lids :( Yeah I forgot to mention I used this on top of a primer, cream eyeshadow and powder eyeshadow, re-edited the post now, but I really tried my hardest with this and it just didn't work! x
DeleteI quite like these myself, it doesn't fade on me (actually some of the colours stain) but I don't have oily lids and I'm usually wearing primer and eyeshadow. Its a shame it didn't work for you, but as long as you have something that does :)
ReplyDeleteAh that's lucky, although such a shame about the staining, if it had lasted longer on my lids perhaps it would've stained! I forgot to mention I used this on top of a primer, cream eyeshadow AND a powder eyeshadow so it really wasn't short of a foundation, I just blame my oily lids!
