Eye of Horus Goddess Smokey Eye Pencil in Black - Review and Swatches

A while ago, I tweeted that because of my Egyptian heritage, I was curious as to how good the Eye of Horus brand translated its Egyptian example. Luckily, they got in touch to let me try out the Goddess Smokey Eye Pencil from their range to prove just how good they are!

Straight away, the packaging tells you a lot of hard work has gone into this line - the black and gold theme gives the idea that an explorer found these stashed away in a KV tomb... Who knows, maybe Egyptian Pharaohs were buried with their eyeliners? The little Eye of Horus on the end amuses me to no end as well, so we can already tell I'm easily satisfied by a box. The life of a blogger, kids, let this be a warning to you.
This is by far the longest eye pencil I've ever owned, not because of the added sponge applicator but you're getting a lot of product with this. I usually run eyeliners out in a month at the least, so this will live a long and happy life in my makeup bag.
The pencil comes with a built-in smudging sponge, which is absolutely ideal when you're on the go and you haven't thought to pack something to smudge your liner with - and let's face it, swiping it with the back of your finger turns us into Alice Cooper at the best of times.
Now the moment we've all been waiting for - the pencil itself. There's a substantial amount of pencil core balanced out with as little pencil casing as possible, so you're getting far more usable product between sharpenings.
The pencil isn't as creamy as every other eyeliner I've ever tried, it's just stiff enough that it doesn't drag on your eyelids but it doesn't crumble in a pencil sharpener or snap off into your waterline.
The pigmentation is second to none, with one quick swipe, a completely opaque black appears on my lid - this might sound absurd, stating that a black eyeliner gives a black line, but I've tried my fair share of liners that turn out a magnificently unexpected shade of grey.
Eye of Horus do not test on animals, which is a fantastic bonus for me as an animal lover. Their products are paraben-free and rich in essential oils and natural waxes, and it's true what they say, you can truly feel the goodness of a natural product.

The product claims to be waterproof, smudge-proof and long lasting. So how does it fare?
Waterproof? A big fat yes. I've never known an eyeliner to sit in my waterline all day without budging, but this is still sat there at midnight, patiently waiting to be removed. I don't even need to set it with a matching eyeshadow, this survives on its own steam, even through the floods of tears at the end of Hayley's story on Corrie the other day.
Smudge-proof? After 30 seconds on my lids, this did not smudge one bit. Usually I'd only have to contemplate touching my eyelid and I'd have black smudged everywhere, but this, like a good man, didn't stray.
Long lasting? You bet. Very few eyeliners stand still for a entire day without vanishing... Where do they run off to? As midnight approached and I faced the gruelling task of removing my makeup, this liner was staring me in the face, just as opaque as I'd applied it that morning.

Could this be the best eyeliner I've ever used? Considering I've never used a high end brand liner before, the answer is yes. The Goddess pencils retail at £13, and they're worth every single penny. They also come in bronze, charcoal, teal and serpentine, so if you're looking into coloured eyeliners that don't look or feel cheap, this is the range for you.

  1. I'd probably buy that just for the packaging, even though I have enough black eyeliners to last me until I'm at least 40!

  2. Oh my, I LOVE the packaging of this eye liner! Absolutely beautiful! And seeing that you're loving it makes me want to buy it too! Any idea whether or not it's also available outside the UK?
