Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid Foundation: Review and Swatch

Unlike mascara, it takes me a long time to get used to a foundation, and I find myself staying loyal to one for months after, repurchasing without even thinking about trying others. If they weren't so expensive, I'd be a foundation whore, but as it stands, I'm a poor student and I stick to what I know 'works' for me.

I've used Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid for a few years because it's always been on a 3 for 2 offer which caught my eye each time, thinking to myself 'no, I don't need it now, but I may need it soon and there won't be an offer then!' so it's plunged straight into my basket.

But what does it do for me? Why do I keep going back?

The simple answer is it does half of what I ask a foundation to do - it evens out my uneven skin surface and colour and it makes me look and feel a lot healthier than I would without it. I find I need two pumps of this to cover my face for a day, so the bottle lasts me about 4-5 months, which is better than I come to expect from a liquid foundation.

However, as always I'm a pessimist and I've found a fair few gripes and groans to make about this.

My complaint lies mainly with the packaging - the pump-action bottle is great until you near the bottom of the bottle, and because the pump is as good as welded into place on the top, I have to prize the lid off with a pen, which has caused me numerous injuries and unintended stabbings. Also, because the formula is quite thick, it's impossible to just tip it into your hand once the lid is off, so you have to find a utensil to scrape the remnants from the bottom! And once the lid is off, there's no putting it back on unless you intend to keep injuring yourself every morning, so you really have to find a new way of covering up the bottle or the foundation dries out within a week.

This is the lightest shade of the entire range, Light Porcelain, and that's what lets it down, this is still not light enough for my skin and the colour range on offer isn't exactly extensive. I have good days and bad days where I end up a shade of orange in patches, not because it clings to dry skin or anything, but it's rather hard to blend. Despite its liquid form, it dries faster than you would like when you're trying to blend it, especially if it's too dark for your skin tone.

Because it's quite hard to blend, I'd suggest using a brush to apply this foundation. Before I started blogging, I used a sponge and thought that was just how it was supposed to be, but now I've used a brush, it's such a drastic change in ease of blending, I'm in love with it all over again.

Maybelline exaggerated a teeny bit with the term 'airbrush finish' as this isn't a full coverage foundation, it doesn't cover my blemishes by far but it evens out the redness and uneven surface of my skin, so I'm impressed by that.

I probably will repurchase this purely because I'm a little too scared to try something else out and find out it doesn't work having wasted £7+, I'm not made of money!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's using it, I don't see many other bloggers that use drugstore foundations! Yeah it's such a shame when I end up orange somedays, but it's worth it for the great non-orange days! xx

  2. I use drugstore foundations :) i've only ever tried one high end foundation and it was the clinique superbalanced one which was pretty amazing but its about £23. I use the rimmel perfect match one at the moment and a sample size of the No7 stay perfect foundation which i'll defo buy the full size of on payday. I used to use maybelline dream foundation for work and it's fine. I also want to try out the bourjois healthy mix foundations too, i love drugstore ones! :D

  3. I have the same issue with drugstore foundations too, I can never find one light enough. I love Revlon Colorstay, but I have to mix it with some white foundation to lighten it a bit. Shame about the packaging with this one! I normally like pump bottles, I never thought about it not working properly when it gets near the bottom.
