The Zombie Christmas Playlist

If you haven't already noticed, I'm not a Christmassy person! I love Halloween and I'm still in denial that it's actually over for another year, so I try not to pay too much attention to all the pretty lights and decorations. Although I will admit my favourite part of Christmas is being able to crack out my Christmas playlist! It expands with every passing year and it only gets better each time, so I thought it would be nice to talk you through my tracks and why I love them so much they deserve a coveted place in my playlist...

All album covers are taken from Google Images searches.

Fall Out Boy - Yule Shoot Your Eye Out
Purely on witty song title alone - don't you just love FOB's song naming? This is the ideal song for me this year because it basically describes a breakup before Christmas and the bitterness that follows. Although admittedly it could just apply to general dissatisfaction with people around Christmas time, like when you've bought well thought-out presents for someone and they don't buy you anything in return.

The gifts you're receiving from me will be:
1 awkward silence,
And 2 hopes you'll cry yourself to sleep staying up waiting by the phone.
All I want this year is for you to dedicate your last breath to me,
Before you bury yourself alive.
Don't come home for Christmas,
You're the last thing I wanna see underneath the tree.
Merry Christmas, I could care less.

Michael Buble - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Also pretty apt for this Christmas for me, but more optimistic than FOB! I love Michael Buble's voice and I bought his Christmas album for my mum a few years ago and I stole it before she even got a chance to hear them!

They're singing Deck The Halls,
But it's not like Christmas at all,
Oh I remember when you were here,
And all the fun we had last year!

The Used - Alone This Holiday
Ironically this is exactly the same theme as my first two, only a bit more blunt with its message. I absolutely adore The Used, they're my ultimate favourite band and this song is testament to that. Have a listen out for Kelly Osbourne's vocals in this, it's agonisingly ironic that she was dating Bert McCracken (singer of The Used) hence her appearance in this track, and he split up with her on Valentine's Day - talk about being alone this holiday!

I left you with nothing,
And that's what you own.
Just throw the thought of us away,
You'll be alone this holiday.

Queen - Thank God It's Christmas
Any playlist of mine involves Queen, and thank god they made a Christmas song! It's realistic in it's message though, it's not a brazen optimistic praise of festivities, it's down-to-earth and reminds me of what Christmas is really about.

Oh my love,
We've had our share of tears,
Oh my friend,
We've had our hopes and fears,
Oh my friends,
It's been a long hard year,
But now it's Christmas.
Yes it's Christmas,
Thank god it's Christmas!

Rise Against - Making Christmas
How could I neglect Nightmare Before Christmas in this? My absolute favourite cover on the Nightmare Revisited album! I'll be reviewing the entire album before Christmas, keep your eyes peeled!

No no no,
Now that's all wrong,
This thing will never make a present!
It's been dead for MUCH too long,
Try something fresher, something pleasant!
Try again, don't give up!

Tom McRae - Wonderful Christmas
I'm sure we all know the Paul McCartney original, but this is by far my favourite above Shakin' Stevens. I first heard this on Lost Christmas, a BBC drama with Eddie Izzard, and I was in floods of tears because of this song and it's significance with the drama, so if it's repeated this Christmas, I simply cannot recommend it highly enough! It's so emotional in comparison with the original, I'm a sucker for pianos and his low-toned voice is haunting.

The party's on,
The spirit's up,
We're here tonight,
And that's enough.
Simply having a wonderful Christmas time.

Street Drum Corps - Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
Now I always loved the Lennon original but I have to admit this is just a fraction better because of Bert McCracken's vocals. If I could marry a song, I'd marry anything sung by Bert. Nevertheless, this is just a timeless track, although the subject matter doesn't fit now, after all war isn't over and probably never will be....

So this is Christmas,
And what have you done?
Another year over,
And a new one begun.

Wednesday 13 - Buried By Christmas
I love Wednesday 13. I have no explanation why. I'm in stitches with every single track. This is no exception. You'll see by this lyric (trust me, I'm not making this up)...

All I want for Christmas is a custom-fit casket,
With a black velvet interior.
Oh yeah...
And a bucket of chicken.

August Burns Red - Carol Of The Bells
I love instrumentals. I love heavy guitars. I love heavy guitar instrumentals. This is one beast of a song and I love it!

Blink 182 - I Won't Be Home For Christmas
If you grew up in the 90s and you don't remember this song, then you missed out. Blink made me smile so much growing up and I couldn't wait for Christmas to come round so I could whack out this classic!

Outside the carollers start to sing,
I can't describe the joy they bring,
Cos joy is something they don't bring me.

The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)
Saving the best for last! This was the only Christmas single I've EVER bought and I was gutted when it didn't get the number one spot. Anyone who knows me will recognise me by my Darkness hoodie and that means I saw them play this live, and I have to tell you, that was the happiest I've ever been, in that moment I was buzzing. Every time I hear this song, in shops, on the radio in the background of an episode of Emmerdale, I get up and sing along. No lie.

Dust underneath the mistletoe leaves,
When you're not here,
You went away before Boxing Day,
Now how the hell am I gonna make it into the new year?

And the last song on this playlist is not Christmassy as such, but because I don't know of any other New Year songs, this is always on my festive playlist.

Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year
I find this song perfectly describes my feelings every New Year. I always hope I'll feel brand new and fresh on 1st January, but it just feels like another day!

So this is the new year,
And I don't feel any different.
The clanking of crystal,
Explosions off in the distance,
In the distance.

And that's it! What a rollercoaster journey through my festive music, from punk rock to metal to Michael Buble!
