Rimmel Kate Matte Lipstick 101 - Review

Despite being a beauty addict, I don't actually own that many lipsticks. The ones I do own, I don't use. There's always that cloud hanging over me, with the voice inside my head that says, 'stop Ali! Don't do it! You know the rules - if you've exaggerated your eyes, go easy on your lips!'. Of course, this is a hurdle I come across all too often, because I can't go a day without my signature heavy eyeshadow. I also have naturally super pigmented lips so I get asked what lip colour I'm wearing all too often. But this lipstick caught my eye purely for the fact it's matte and it's a light colour in the bullet, lighter than my lips anyway. I actually envy people with concealer lips, that way every single lipstick I put on wouldn't look odd.

Love At First Bite: Well, it's definitely not the colour it looks in the tube, it comes out a lot darker on my skintone, a lot more blue-based and it looks so very strange. It smells just like I expect a lipstick to smell - tacky. It's one of those cosmetic smells and for me, it doesn't disappear as fast as I'd like, I still notice it after half an hour of wear. It glides on easily without dragging my lips, which is what I expected of a matte colour, but I just don't like the colour, it's such an unnatural colour on my already strongly pigmented lips.

The Second Coming: On a normal university day, this lasts about 3 hours on my lips providing I don't obsessively chew them like I always do. I've read so many people saying this matte colour doesn't dry out your lips, but it really dries out mine. Perhaps I have the most sensitive lips on the planet, but really I struggled with this one. No colour bleeding though, and it faded well so it didn't look like I hadn't topped it up.

Third Tomb Lucky: Made the mistake of not using a lip scrub before applying this, and it just made my lips worse. The matte texture seemed to shred my lips even more. I'd like to say I like the matte-ness because it looks better to me than one with a sheen, but the feeling when I rub my lips together is just, yuck.

Of course I'll be much more aware of matte lipsticks now I've gained this experience, but also I've learned not to trust the swatches of lipsticks I find on blogs. I've never found a blogger that has as pale skin as me, alongside my naturally super pigmented lips, so it's quite hard for me to find a 'my-lips-but-better' shade. That being said, the formula of this is nice, it lasts longer than most lipsticks, I just can't stand the smell or the matte feeling.

Have you tried this? What's your view?

  1. I'm super pale, NC15 and I too have mega pigmented lips. People are forever asking me what colour I have on when infact it's just my natural colour.

If you're looking for a nude shade you should check the Kate Moss 03 which is in the black tube. I got it from my blog secret santa and it's not one i'd ever have picked up for myself. I'm forever trying pink toned nudes but after receiving that I realised brown toned nudes look better on me.

17's mirror shine on lipstick in Beehive is also a great shade for adding a little bit of shine and just making your lips look that bit better. I've used it in a few posts :

And 17's mirror shine on lipstick in Flirtini is one of my most used lipsticks and is definitely a "my lips but better" shade for me :

Maybe one of those would suit your skintone/lips :)

    1. Thank god I'm not alone here, I'm getting seriously irate constantly buying lipsticks because they look amazing on every other blogger but never on me! The Kate Moss one looks lovely, I'll definitely have to give it a try soon, thanks so much for all the advice! I'll admit I never thought to try 17's lipsticks but in all your pictures the finish looks fantastic, I can't thank you enough for all the advice, I was in despair here! xx

    2. Wayne from Gossmakeupartist on YouTube said before that when testing out lipsticks you should swatch them on your fingertips as thats a truer representation than swatching on the back of you hand. However it looks on your fingertips is how it'll apply on your lips etc.

Have fun swatching and trying out new shades! :)

  2. I have this same lipstick and it's actually my favourite. Have you tried any of the other colours? Maybe if it's drying your lips out you should have a look at revlons lip butters :)

    1. I haven't tried any of the others actually, I should though, I'm loving the darker shades! I've tried out two lip butters now and I'll say I love them it's just a shame once again I picked Sugar Frosting and it wasn't at all pigmented on my lips :( xx

  3. I love the 110 shade by Rimmel, it's a really nice coral-y red. It is very drying though, oh my! x
