Revlon ColorStay Foundation for Combination/Oily Skin in Ivory - Review and Swatch

We've all had that moment when we finally realise our foundation isn't doing us any favours, but we carry on using it regardless, either because we don't want to fork out for another one, or simply because we can't be bothered to look for another one that suits our shade and skin type.
I'd been using Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid in Ivory for about 7 years. It was patchy at times, completely the wrong shade for me, and worse - it made my nose oilier than it actually is. I always blamed it on my powder not doing a good enough job, but when it's up against the greasiest mother of all foundations, no powder stood a chance.
A few weeks ago, I decided to take the plunge for the Revlon ColorStay. It had been rated so highly among pale bloggers, so I had the urge to give it a try, what's the worst that could happen, I end up with another mismatched foundation?

Thankfully, it's so perfectly matched to my skin, I've discovered my new go-to foundation.
I purchased the Oily and Combination option, which is perfect for controlling my oily T-zone. However, the very tip of my nose is bone dry because we've had a lot of fires in our fireplace lately to save on heating bills, so this foundation does slightly aggravate my dry skin there and flake it a little. But in comparison with the way it handles the temperamental skin on the rest of my face, I can't complain.

My one and only true quibble about this foundation is the lack of pump, instead you have to pour the foundation out, which inevitably ends in disaster as you pour out way too much each time. I've resorted to the expert trick of pouring out too little, then dunking my finger in the top of the bottle to retrieve the rest. That being said, pump bottles force you to painstakingly prize the lid off and somehow scoop the product from the bottom of the bottle when you're running low, so again, I really can't complain.

The more fluid formula makes it so easy to apply and blend to create a finish that I love. I'd say this is a medium-full coverage because most of my minor redness disappears under this, but I still daub on concealer as always just for security.
I've yet to have a day where this foundation wears off on me. I leave it on for a good 12 hours a day and I've yet to feel like it's not on my face, so I'd happily say this gives a 12 hour coverage, but I've never tried, nor had the desire to try it for the 24 hours it claims, so I can't comment on that.

Speaking of 24 hour foundation, did anyone read that story of an Orthodox Jewish woman suing Lancome because her foundation didn't last 24 hours over the Sabbath day?

No longer am I leaving a hideous white smudge on someone's shoulder when I hug them, oooh no, this baby is non-transferable. Anyone else remember that line from Polar Express? 'These tickets are not TRANSFERRABLE'!
Oh the life of a Tom Hanks fan.

So all in all, I'm super pleased with this buy, even though it was a little pricey at £12.49 in Boots, but as they say, you get what you pay for, and that rule's especially true when it comes to foundation. I'm very impressed with the shade range as well, Revlon appears to be the only drugstore brand that does my shade of 'pale as a sheet', however I've read that the colour range isn't so impressive on the other end of the spectrum, so for darker skins this might not be for you.

So that's my opinion on the Revlon Colorstay foundation, what's yours?

  1. I loved this foundation, but it was much too dark for me! I agree that it would be so much better with a pump, it was impossible to reach the bottom when it started to run out. You could always transfer it to a pump bottle but it's hassle. :(

    1. Ah now you mention it, it's a little darker than my natural skin colour, but it's so much more affordable/accessible than say Illamasqua! Oh god, I've not even contemplated getting to the bottom of it yet! Looks like I'll be storing it upside-down! x

  3. I swatched this when I was looking for a new foundation but it was way too dark and I ended up going for the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum but I've seen so many good reviews on this one that I feel like I'm missing out! I might buy it anyway and use a white foundation to make it match my skin :)

    1. Oh really? I'll have to look into Bourjois now, I assumed they wouldn't go as pale as I needed, thanks for that! x

  4. I've been using this a lot recently, it's a great match and the only longwear foundation that actually lasts longer than the regular-wear ones for me! Whenpouring it out I find the best technique is to put the back of my hand tightly over the mouth of the bottle, invert it for a couple of seconds and then revert before taking my hand away - it leaves about the right amount for your whole face on the back of your hand and doesn't spill.

  5. There are two other brands that do paler-than-usual foundations - MaxFactor 'Xperience' has an ultra light and slightly pinky shade (also a nice formula) - I used that for a while before noticing the slight pinkness that clashed with my neck (but not my face), gave the rest of it to my extremely pale friend when I was doing her bridesmaid makeup.
Rimmel Match Perfection in 010 Light Ivory is a good one if you need something less drying. Not so good for oily skins as far as my testing goes though but a good cheap standby if you are wanting a less expensive foundation for occasional short-term use.

    1. Wow thank you so much for that pouring tip, it works like a dream! Just the right amount I need to slap on my face, thank you! Also thank you so much for the other foundation recommendations, I'll definitely look into those both when I run out of this and need an alternative, the Rimmel sounds good except my skin is 80% super oily :/ x

    2. I love Revlon Colorstay! I used to use this other one but I have the same oily skin problem and so far Revlon's the only one I found that works for me.
You should check out PS Beauty, it's a really nice website to find the right foundation for you(especially for shades: Finally!).
